Dr. Jyoti Mazumder
FOUNDER
Professor Jyoti Mazumder is the Founder and Managing Partner of SenSigma LLC. Mazumder is the Robert H. Lurie Professor of Engineering in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Material Science and Engineering, and the Director of NSF Industry University Co-operative Center for Lasers and Plasmas in Advanced Manufacturing at the University of Michigan. Elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2012, Mazumder has published more than 375 papers and co-authored books on laser chemical vapor deposition and laser materials processing. He also served as editor or co-editor of 10 books on topics related to laser materials processing and mechanical engineering. Additionally, until December 2009, he served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Laser Application. Mazumder holds 16 U.S. patents. He has taken his research to market by commercializing DMD systems through a start-up POM Group Inc. of which he was CEO, until it was acquired by DM3D technologie in 2013.
Mazumder has received numerous awards and honors for his research, including the Distinguished University Innovator Award for 2012, which honors faculty who have made important and lasting contributions to society by developing novel ideas and insights through their research, and then translating them to practice; the Schawlow Award for seminal contributions to laser application research from the Laser Institute of America (2003); the William T.Ennor Award for manufacturing from ASME (2006); the Adams Memorial Membership Award from the American Welding Society (2007); the Thomas A. Edison Patent Award from ASME for inventing the first closed-loop direct metal deposition system (2010); the Manufacturing Engineer of the Year(1986) from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers; and the University Scholar (1985) and Xerox (1987) awards from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Mazumder is also a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Society of Metals (ASM), and the Laser Institute of America (LIA), where he served as president in 2000.
